In 2013 the best thing happened to me. It is all thanks to . I cannot explain how I came to know about, but at the spur of the moment I began experimenting with one course, English. I really enjoyed studying online for personal development. I have completed three courses on and want to share my thoughts on the importance of online education.
High cost of education
Considering the huge cost of higher education in our local universities and other institutions of higher learning, could not have come at a better time. The Kenyan Government and others are bracing to increase university fees. This move is going to deny tens of thousands of needy, bright students the opportunity to pursue higher education. Whenever I think about these costs, I am left with no option but to consider online education as one of the avenues to quench my thirst for knowledge.
Value of online education
The value of online education cannot be underestimated. Already I have been certified in three courses by - Diploma in , Certificate in and Certificate in . Where on earth would I have been able to study these three courses at my own pace, for free? Had you been studying these courses at your local university, you would have to part with thousands of dollars may be for one degree or even diploma. The quality of courses offered and the pedagogy employed by is reason enough to believe that online learning is a viable alternative to traditional education.
Increasing my employability
My studies with increased my employability and helped me to get my current job. This has happened to me, it might as well happen to you. Actually, I did include courses I took in my resume + on my LinkedIn profile and guess what? Most of HR managers I talked to had no clue there is such a thing. I don't think the courses I took impressed them, but the fact that I know of such website and tried it showed them I want to constantly learn, improve and explore and earned me some points. Moreover, I explained them how can they save their budget on education for employees if they introduce them to Coursera and motivate them to take some courses to learn new stuff. I have just get my certificate for attaining my Basic Study Skills. I'm now doing my Diploma in Operations Management. Yes, the courses is free. The only payment you make is when you are awarded your certificate/diploma (you need to reach over 80% to be awarded your certificate/diploma).
